Subject: Treatment of dogs in Bali, Indonesia

Dear President,
Dear Minister,
Dear Ambassador,

Please help stop the senseless, barbaric mass killing of Bali dogs!

I am writing to express my deep sadness and horror at recent reports that mass and indiscriminate culling of roaming dogs is being reintroduced by order of the Governor on the island of Bali!

While I understand (given human health concerns in relation to human and canine rabies cases) the need for authorities to take action to manage the roaming dog population, I am appalled to learn of the brutal and fatal treatment of dogs in Bali.

Many healthy and rabies-vaccinated dogs continue to be culled!

In one village 99 dogs were fatally poisoned with strychnine, Dec. 2014.
At the end of January, healthy, sterilised and vaccinated Kuta Beach dogs were shot at 3am.
Locals and tourists loved these friendly dogs and are disgusted!
This action simply undermines the past investment and achievement of the Bali government – in collaboration with animal welfare groups and with substantial international monetary support – to safeguard human and animal health.
There are humane and scientifically credible alternatives to the indiscriminate killing of roaming animals.
International evidence proves that the mass elimination of roaming dogs is ineffective in controlling and eradicating rabies. It is inhumane.
It is a socially debilitating practice that is regarded as abhorrent by many governments and by human and animal health authorities around the world including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE)!
I urge you to do all you can to encourage the Bali Provincial Government to work with animal protection organisations and human and animal health specialists to end the cull and make a true commitment to humane, sustainable solutions to rabies control and eradication!

The Bali heritage dog is far too valuable to have its very survival threatened by this indefensible and internationally deplored action which will NOT control rabies and which is likely to damage Bali’s tourism industry and Indonesia’s international reputation!

I also urge you to support reform of Indonesia’s weak and outdated animal welfare laws and to advocate for better law enforcement!

Outrage is intense.
Please take action in a wise and humane manner!
Thank you

Sincerely:
